AUBURN, Ala. – Heading into Monday's final round, the Mississippi State men's tennis team will have a singles and doubles representative after the Bulldogs turned in another impressive day at the ITA Southern Regionals on Sunday.
Sophomore Nuno Borges began the winning on Sunday as the Bulldog continued his sensational run in the singles draw. No. 43 Borges defeated one friend and one foe on his way to the final round as Borges faced fellow Bulldog Strahinja Rakic in quarterfinal action before taking on No. 18 Gustav Hansson of Ole Miss in the semifinal round.
The battle of the Bulldogs ended with Borges being the victor as he took the match, 6-3, 6-3. After downing Rakic, Borges was tasked with taking down top-seeded Hansson, which the Bulldog did with ease, 7-5, 6-1. The Bulldog faces Tulane's No. 66 Constatin Schmitz on Monday at 10 a.m. CT.
MSU also had a doubles team in action on Sunday, with the duo of Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey competing in the semifinal round. The pair fought back from a first-set deficit to upset Alabama's No. 26 Osama Mazen and Matthew Rossouw of Alabama, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0(8). The Bulldog duo will face Fabian Fallert and Grey Hamilton of Ole Miss at 1 p.m. CT on Monday for the doubles title.
"I'm proud of the effort our entire team has given this weekend," head coach Matt Roberts said. "We've come a long way and it's exciting to watch our progression. To have a finalist in doubles and singles play is hard to come by and we've done it with three sophomores."
Borges is the first MSU singles player to reach the final round of a Southern Regional since Malte Stropp, who won in 2013. The ranked victory over No. 18 Hansson marks the highest-ranked win for Borges as a Bulldog, with his previous high coming against No. 28 Ryotara Matsamura of Kentucky this season.
Braun and Foshey have earned the best doubles record so far for MSU, as the pair has posted a 7-2 mark. The Bulldog tandem has earned two ranked wins as well, both coming this weekend at the ITA Southern Regionals.
The singles and doubles champions of this weekend's regional advance to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., on Sunday, Nov. 3.
