Bulldogs Turn In Another Big Day At ITA Southern Regionals

AUBURN, Ala. – On the second day of play at the ITA Southern Regionals, the Mississippi State men's tennis team earned seven wins on Saturday to cap another successful day at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
The Bulldogs had two doubles teams and five singles players in action on Saturday, with one doubles and two singles players advancing to Sunday's action.
Doubles play began with a bang as the duo of Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey won two matches, the last against the top-seeded pair at the tournament, to advance to the semifinals on Sunday. The Bulldog duo downed UAB's Eric Komatl and Christian Coetzee, 8-5, before knocking off No. 1 seed and 6th-ranked Filip Kraljevic and Zvonimir Babic of Ole Miss, 8-6. The MSU tandem will face 26th-ranked Osama Mazen and Matthew Rossouw of Alabama on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. CT.
Nuno Borges and Strahinja Rakic could not overcome Ole Miss' Fabian Fallert and Grey Hamilton on Saturday as the Bulldog pair fell 8-7 in the round of 16.
Singles play was highlighted by Rakic's upset win against 35th-ranked Jordan Daigle of LSU, 6-4, 6-2, as the sophomore used momentum from the round of 32 win to defeat Tulane's Chi-Shan Jao, 6-4, 6-4. No. 43 Borges also had a big day at the ITA Southern Regionals as he defeated Tulane's Tyler Schick, 6-3, 6-1, and South Alabama's Tuki Jacobs, 7-6(5), 6-3, to set up a quarterfinal matchup against doubles partner Rakic at 10 a.m. CT Sunday.
No. 26 Mate Cutura split two three-set matches on Saturday, as the senior defeated Tulane's Tim Ruetzel, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4, before falling to Ole Miss' Kralijevic, 7-6(6), 6-4. State's Braun and Foshey were defeated in their round of 32 singles matches on Saturday, each falling in three-set battles.
"Our team continues to improve at every tournament we've competed in this fall and I am very pleased with our development," head coach Matt Roberts said. "We're having a lot of success and I'm looking forward to seeing that grow over the next few weeks."
The Bulldog tandem of Braun and Foshey now have a team-leading six wins in doubles action this season, while Borges and Rakic have four as a pair.
The singles and doubles champions of this weekend's regional advance to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., on Sunday, Nov. 3.
