Second Scrimmage Ends In A Tie For Maroon And Gray

STARKVILLE, Miss. -Â Courtesy of small ball and the long ball, Maroon and Gray played to a 6-6 tie through six innings on Mississippi State's second fall scrimmage Saturday at Dudy Noble Field. Â
With one out in the top of the first, junior and 2016 MLB Draft pick Brent Rooker sent one over the wall in left to plate sophomore Hunter Stovall and put Gray ahead 2-0.
Maroon countered in the home half of the second with a big inning that began on a back-to-back walks. A fielder's choice, three hits and a sacrifice fly allowed Maroon to push across a total of six in the frame, which included a two-run single from freshman Denver McQuary.
After reaching on an error in the third, sophomore Luke Alexander came all the way around to score on a sacrifice fly from junior transfer Hunter Vansau and bring the Gray deficit to 6-3.
Down to their final three outs in the sixth, Gray used a triple from junior Tanner Poole and a two-run homer from freshman Dustin Skelton to tie the game at six and force a draw.
McQuary's hot day continued on the mound as he struck out four of the six batters he faced on 2.0 perfect innings pitched.
The Diamond Dawgs will wrap up their three-scrimmage weekend tomorrow at Dudy Noble Field with first pitch set for noon.
