MSU Posts Seven Wins On Day One At ITA Southern Regionals

AUBURN, Ala. – With a combined seven wins in singles and doubles action on Friday, the Mississippi State men's tennis team kicked off the ITA Southern Regionals with a successful first day of action from the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
Doubles play began the day as MSU was represented by three pairs who all received byes into the second round of play. The Bulldogs went 2-1 as the teams of Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey, along with Nuno Borges and Strahinja Rakic won easily while No. 19 Mate Cutura and Vaughn Hunter fell in a hard-fought contest.
Braun and Foshey defeated Nicholls State's pair of Sam Meesen and Bernay Wezeman, 8-1, as the Bulldog duo moved on to the Saturday's third round of play. The pair will face UAB's Eric Komatl and Christian Coetzee at 8 a.m. CT in the round of 16.
MSU's second double win of the day was by a margin of 8-3 as the pair of Borges and Rakic defeated Troy's Hassah Ndayishimiye and Jaiqi Duan. The Bulldog doubles team will face Ole Miss' Fabian Fallert and Grey Hamilton on Saturday at 8 a.m. CT.
Cutura and Hunter gave great effort in their opening match, but the pair fell to LSU's Julian Saborio and Gabor Csonka, 9-7.
In singles play, the Bulldogs went 5-1 as No. 22 Cutura, No.43 Borges, Braun, Foshey and Rakic all won while Hunter fell in a tough three-setter.
No. 22 Cutura earned retribution against LSU's Julian Saborio, 6-3, 6-2, as the second-seeded Bulldog moved on to round of 32 action. The senior faces Tulane's Tim Ruetzel at 12 p.m. CT. Fellow ranked Bulldog and fifth seeded Borges also earned a straight-set victory as he downed Troy's Amer Bedwan, 6-3, 6-4. Borges also faces a Tulane foe on Saturday as he takes on Tyler Schick at 12 p.m. CT.
Braun took down Nicholls State Bernay Wezeman, 6-3, 6-4, while Foshey defeated Zuonimir Babic of Ole Miss, 6-4, 6-2. The sophomores face Auburn's Carles Sarrio and LSU's 49th-ranked Justin Butsch, respectively on Saturday.
Rakic earned MSU's fifth and final singles win on Friday as the sophomore downed Southern Miss' Daniel Merker in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. Hunter also forced his opponent to three sets, but couldn't overcome LSU's Nikola Samerdzic as the Tiger won, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Rakic will face a Tiger as well as he takes on No. 35 Jordan Daigle on Saturday.
The doubles win for Braun and Foshey was their team-leading fourth, while Borges and Rakic earned their third as a pair. Braun's win in singles gives him a 5-1 career record at the ITA Southern Regionals.
The singles and doubles champions of this weekend's regional advance to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., on Sunday, Nov. 3.
