MSU Women?s Tennis Opens 2016 With Twinbill Vs. Alcorn State
January 15, 2016 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – After finishing with its best fall under seventh-year head coach Daryl Greenan, the 29th-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis team is set to host Alcorn State in a doubleheader on Saturday at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre. Start time for the 2016 season-opening twinbill is set for 1 p.m. CT.
Due to the current construction project at the Pitts Tennis Centre and MSU Softball Complex, fans attending Saturday's matches are asked to enter the tennis stadium via the west side (sidewalk adjacent to the Mike Sanders Track Complex). The east side stairwell will not be accessible this weekend.
State returns four veteran players from last season's team. All-SEC junior Jasmine Lee opens the season ranked at 13th nationally in singles, the highest a State women's player has ever been ranked in singles. Senior and two-time, All-SEC star Georgiana Patrasc looks to conclude her remarkable career with the Bulldogs after posting a 9-4 record in singles play this past fall. Sophomores Jennifer Brown and Louise Ronaldson are back after playing key roles in the State lineup last spring as rookies.
Four fresh Bulldog faces look to make their dual match debut in this weekend's doubleheader. Freshman phenom Anastasia Rentouli kicks off the spring ranked at 36th in singles after posting a 12-2 singles record in the fall. Transfer sophomores Madison Harrison and Kristina Vozniak and freshman Caroline Kelly finished the fall with a combined 21-14 singles mark.
“We are all excited about the season and we look forward to competing tomorrow,” Greenan said.
State's women are coming off one of the best season's in program history. Last spring, the Bulldogs were ranked as high as 27th nationally (highest in 10 years) and reached the second round of the NCAA Championship for the first time since 2001. MSU's ladies also registered their most wins in a season since 1986 and the highest ranked win ever, downing No. 6 Alabama.
