MSU?s Lee Splits Consolation Matches To End Oracle/ITA Masters
September 20, 2015 | Women's Tennis
MALIBU, Calif. – After dropping a tough three-setter in Friday's opening round of the Oracle/ITA Masters, Mississippi State women's tennis player Jasmine Lee split a pair of consolation matches on day two of the prestigious tournament.
The junior Lee, ranked 23rd nationally, defeated 53rd ranked Kiah Generette of Baylor Saturday in the consolation quarterfinals 6-3, 7-6(1). Lee jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first set, but the Baylor Bear fought back to even the score 2-2. However, Lee regained her rhythm and claimed the first set 6-3. In the second set, Generette broke out to a 3-1 lead and then a 5-3 lead, but Lee would rally to tie the set at 5-5 and then force and dominate a tiebreaker 7-1 to win the second set and the match.
Lee then faced off against California's 16th-ranked Klara Fabikova in the consolation semifinals, but fell 6-1, 6-3 to the Golden Bear. Fabikova won the first four games in the first set, ultimately claiming it 6-1. In the second set, Fabikova had an early lead of 3-1 and the Cal star would not relinquish the lead, winning the second set 6-3 to claim the match.
“This was a great experience for Jasmine to play this prestigious event,” MSU head coach Daryl Greenan said. “She played three quality opponents and picked up a solid win. I am sure she will learn from these matches and use them moving forward with her season.”
The Oracle/ITA Masters, a national collegiate championship, is in its first season. It features 16 of the country's top men's and women's singles players and the top eight teams in doubles.
