MSU?s Lee Falls In Tough Three-Setter To Open Oracle/ITA Masters

MALIBU, Calif. – After receiving the call Wednesday to compete in the inaugural Oracle/ITA Masters tournament this weekend, Mississippi State women's tennis player Jasmine Lee put up a valiant effort in her opening match Friday, but ultimately dropped a tough three-set affair.
The junior Lee, ranked 23rd nationally, faced 13th-ranked Miami sophomore Sinead Lohan, but could not outlast the Hurricane foe, falling 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. Lohan took the last two games of the first set to get the early lead, but Lee battled back in the second to even the match. Despite Lohan jumping out to 4-0 lead in the third, Lee fought back to 4-2, but Lohan would not relinquish her lead.
Lee will next face 53rd-ranked Kiah Generette of Baylor in Saturday's consolation round at 12:30 p.m. PT. It will be the first meeting between the players. Generette was defeated earlier today by fourth-ranked Maegan Manasse of California 7-5, 6-4. The winner will advance to play in the consolation semifinals later Saturday.
“It was a tough back and forth battle today,” MSU head coach Daryl Greenan said. “Unfortunately, Jasmine was a little off and could not maintain the sharpness she needed on the offensive. She fought hard and it came down to just a couple points here and there, but credit her opponent for running down every ball and keeping the pressure on her. Being a last-minute entry meant we traveled all night yesterday and didn't have a chance to hit. Hopefully, tomorrow she will come out a little more relaxed and raise her level a little. If she does that, she has a chance to beat anyone out here.”
The Oracle/ITA Masters, a national collegiate championship, is in its first season. It features 16 of the country's top men's and women's singles players and the top eight teams in doubles.
