STARKVILLE, Miss. –After opening the 2015 season with a pair of third-place finishes, the Mississippi State cross country teams look to continue improving this weekend at the Commodore Classic in Nashville.
The men's team is set to run the Percy Warner Park course at 9 a.m. Saturday, with the women immediately following at 10 a.m.
“We had a lot of athletes step up and perform well at the season opener in Memphis,” MSU coach Houston Franks said. “This weekend we hope to see even more strong performances now that we have one meet down.”
Sophomore Mia Meydrich will look for another strong performance after finishing first for the Bulldogs and fifth overall at the Memphis Twilight with a personal-best 17:37.16 in the 5K.
Junior Lisa Ziegler, a consistent Top 3 finisher for State last season, will also be competing after finishing eighth overall and second for MSU in the season opener.
Competing for the first time this season will be seniors Cornelia Griesche and Marta Freitas. Last season. Griesche finished in MSU's Top 3 in every meet, while Freitas makes her MSU cross country debut following a stellar track season that saw her earn USTFCCCA All-America honors.
Freshmen Shannon Fair and Kristy Terp will be competing in their second meet for the Bulldogs, while fellow freshman Antonia Hehr makes her first appearance for MSU.
The men's squad will be led by seniors Andrew and Patrick Monaghan, who were MSU's top-two finishers at third and 14th overall, respectively.
Senior Mathew Dunn also looks to build on a solid opener that saw him finish 15th with a time of 20:37.00.
Branden Nosker and Curtis Kelly will also represent the Maroon and White this weekend along with freshmen JT Mackay, Pierce Rose, Caden Foos, Tristan Orman, Quintin Reiser, Emilio Perco and Zach Weaver.
SEC foe Vanderbilt plays host to this weekend's meet, which also includes Ole Miss and Tennessee in addition to the Bulldogs.
