September 10, 2015 | Women's Tennis
MSU enters the year after finishing the 2014-15 season ranked 32nd nationally (its best final ranking in a decade) and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Championship.
"We are all excited about our first tournament this weekend,” said MSU head coach Daryl Greenan. “The competition will be strong so it will be a good test for us. This first individual event of the year will give the coaching staff an opportunity to see several of our players competing for the first time as Bulldogs. They have been working very hard and practices have been solid, and now we will see where everyone is competitively."
Greenan enters his seventh year as the head coach after leading the Bulldogs back to the NCAA Championship last season for the first time since 2005 and to the second round for the first time since 2001.
Returning for the Maroon and White is senior Georgiana Patrasc who finished her junior season 22-17, ranked 116th in the country, and was named to the 2015 Academic All-SEC team. Following is junior Jasmine Lee who represented State at the 2015 NCAA Singles Championship, becoming the eighth player ever at Mississippi State to do so. After a stellar initial season with MSU, Lee was named First-Team, All-SEC and finished the year ranked 36th nationally.
Also returning are sophomores Jennifer Brown and Louise Ronaldson who were key components in helping the Bulldogs to their success last season. Brown was 21-10 overall in 2014-15 while Ronaldson notched am 18-15 mark.
Four fresh faces joined the team over the summer including sophomore transfers Madison Harrison and Kristina Vozniak, and freshmen Caroline Kelly and Anastasia Rentouli.
Harrison transfers to State after finishing her freshman year at Kansas where she went 16-12 in dual match play and 3-1 in Big 12 earning a spot on the 2015 Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team. Harrison also captured two ITA Summer Circuit singles titles during the off-season. Vozniak comes to Starkville after finishing her freshman season at Stony Brook where she finished with a record of 11-4 in dual match play.
Kelly joins the team after finishing her high school career as a three-star athlete and the sixth-best player in the state of Connecticut according to the Babolat Recruiting Lists. Rentouli is currently a 2015 Greek National Champion in doubles and has one ITF Junior Tournament in singles.
The Bulldog players are set to start play this weekend on Friday at 10 a.m. with doubles matchups with players from Georgia State and again at noon against players from N.C. State. State will then wrap up the day with singles action with Virginia Tech at 2 p.m. Play will also be held on Saturday and Sunday.
