Price Makes Late Push To Capture NCAA Outdoor 1500m Title
June 14, 2015 | Track & Field
EUGENE, Ore. – Heart, passion and leaving it all out on the track are qualities one will find in a champion. On Saturday, Mississippi State's Rhianwedd Price was that very definition.
Making her first appearance in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Price made an impressive final push to earn the title of the 1500m NCAA Champion.
“With a 100 meters to go I just got a kick and thought 'I can do this, I can do this,” Price said. “I was super excited as I was getting closer and closer to the finish line.”
Fighting throughout the race, Price ran a time of 4:09.56, the fastest of her career, to claim the victory. Her victory earned 10 points for the women's team, leading them to a 18th-place finish overall.
“Rhianwedd didn't even make it here last year. She finished 13th in the preliminaries,” Price's distance coach Houston Franks said. “She's worked so hard and she's so driven. She has a fight in her that refuses to give less than her best. I'm so proud of her.”
Teammate Marta Freitas competed alongside Price in the 1500m finals and finished 12th with a time of 4:41.03.
In the field for the Bulldogs, Erica Bougard placed 16th in the high jump after clearing 5-09.75.
Competing for the Bulldogs for the last time, senior Ebony Brinker finished 23th in the triple jump with a leap of 39-08.75.
The women's team concluded the 2015 season on the national stage with a total of 15 team points, capping the year in 18th-place overall.
"Making it to this level is such an accomplishment," MSU head coach Steve Dudley said. "Everyone on this team came and gave it their all this week, especially Rhianwedd who had a huge win today after working hard all season long. Ocian, Marcus and Ebony are three seniors who all stepped up this week and have been a huge part of the success of this program.”
