Diamond Dawgs Drop Series Opener At Ole Miss
May 08, 2015 | Baseball
“We just aren't getting any breaks,” MSU head coach John Cohen said. “It was a pretty even game. We had 15 hard hits and only had seven hits from them. You can hit the ball harder than your opponent and still make great pitches and lose. I am proud of the kids and how hard they are competing.”
MSU fell to 24-25 overall and 8-17 in league play, while Ole Miss improved to 26-24 and 12-13. With five regular-season games remaining, the Bulldogs are in sole possession of the 12th and final spot in the SEC Tournament.
After MSU starter Lucas Laster retired the first eight batters he faced, the Rebels eventually broke through with three runs in the fourth inning.
With two outs, Colby Bortles doubled and Sikes Orvis walked. Robinson followed with a two-run double to left field. After Austin Knight reached as a hit batsman, Nic Perkins followed with an RBI-single.
Laster was later lifted with one out in the sixth inning. He allowed four hits and three runs (all earned), with two walks and a strikeout. Zac Houston (0-2) was touched for the game-winning unearned run in the eighth inning, while allowing two hits in 2.2 innings of relief.
In the MSU sixth inning, Seth Heck reached on an error. Ryan Gridley followed with a double. After a strikeout, Gavin Collins drove in two runs with a double. Wes Rea followed with a game-tying RBI-single.
“Our kids are having competitive at-bats,” Cohen said. “Credit to Zac Houston there at the end for really filling the strike zone. These are tight ballgames and the margin for error is small. For whatever reason, we just aren't winning more of these.”
MSU finished with seven hits, including multi-hit nights by Rea and Brent Rooker.
Ole Miss finished with six hits, including multi-hit nights by Perkins and Robinson.
Christian Trent (7-5) pitched the first eight inning, allowing seven hits and three runs (two earned), with six strikeouts and no walks. Wyatt Short worked around a two-out walk in the ninth inning for his eighth save.
The series resumes with a 6 p.m. start Friday on the SEC Network.
