State Falls to No. 13 Mizzou in SEC Tournament
May 06, 2015 | Softball
BATON ROUGE, La. – In a game dominated by pitching and defense, the Mississippi State softball team lacked enough offense to advance in the Southeastern Conference Tournament on Wednesday.
No. 13 Mizzou downed the Bulldogs, 9-0 in six innings, in the first round of the event at Tiger Park.
The win lifted Mizzou to 39-13 overall and into the quarterfinal round of the SEC Tournament, while MSU dropped to 35-19 overall.
After a number of impressive defensive plays from both sides, Mizzou used a solo home run to left in the home half of the second to go ahead 1-0.
The Tigers would add to their lead in the fourth on a trio of free bases as with one away and the bases loaded, a five-pitch walk make it a 2-0 ballgame in favor of Mizzou.
A grand slam in the fifth and a three-run homer in the sixth ended the game as the Tigers sealed a 9-0 win in six innings.
Sophomore Alexis Silkwood (25-14) suffered the loss for MSU as she allowed six runs on six hits in 5.0 innings of work. Tori Finucane (19-8) got the win for Mizzou as she threw a complete-game one-hitter.
Now eliminated from the SEC Tournament, State will head home in hopes of an at-large bid to the 2015 NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Tournament Selection Show will air live on Sunday, May 10 at 9 p.m. CT on ESPNU.
