
Bougard Has Record Setting Day At SEC Championships

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Opening day of the 2015 SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championships was nothing short of entertaining for Mississippi State, which saw Erica Bougard break the high jump record en route to scoring the most points in the heptathlon on Day 1 in championship history.
With a clearance of 6-00.75, the Byhalia, Miss., native broke the school record to claim the victory in the heptathlon high jump. Prior to the high jump, Bougard ran a time of 13.11 to earn first place in the 100m hurdles to earn 1,108 points. After the high jump, she went on to throw 38-04 in the shot put to place eighth. To conclude Day 1 of the heptathlon, Bougard ran a personal-best and meet record 23.48 in the 200m dash. Bougard sits in first place with the most points in SEC Championship history on day one with 3,820 points.
Setting a personal-best in the 800m run, Rhianwedd Price ran a time of 2:04.02, the second best in school history, to finish first in the prelims. Price advances to Saturday's finals along with teammate Marta Frietas, who finished sixth with a time of 2:05.99, the third best in school history.
On the men's side, Brandon McBride competed in the 800m run for the second time this season and ran a season-best 1:45.87, just short of his personal-best 1:45.35 to finish first in the prelims and qualify for the Saturday's finals.
Three Bulldogs qualified for the 400m hurdle finals on Saturday. Scottie Hearn ran a time of 50.43 to place first in his heat and third overall. Jovan Davis also earned a spot in Saturday's finals with a personal-best 50.72 to finish fourth. After earning ninth with a time of 59:34, Ste'yce McNeil was able to qualify.
Kicking off the decathlon, Zachary Taylor ran a time of 10.65 in the 100m dash to finish first. After the 100m dash was the long jump where Taylor had a leap of 21-11.75 to place ninth. In the shot put, he (38-01.50) finished 10th before placing seventh in the high jump after clearing 6-00.75. Ending the day, Taylor finished second in the 400m dash with a time of 48.57 to land him in third overall with 3,818 points going into day two.
Making his first appearance in the SEC Outdoor Championships, freshman Curtis Thompson threw 248-01 in the javelin, the second best throw in school history, to finish fourth in the event.
At the end of the night, Damian Roszko earned points for the Bulldogs as he finished sixth in the 10,000m run with a time of 30:21.23.
"We still have a lot of work to do, but I thought we had an impressive first day," MSU coach Steve Dudley said. "Erica started the day off on the right foot and Damian brought home a good finish. We are looking forward to tomorrow."
Saturday's events will begin at 10 a.m CT with the completion of the men's decathlon.
