WEST POINT, Miss. – Mississippi State fired a team score of 291 in the final round of the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship to place fourth.
It was the regular-season finale for the Bulldogs, who now turn their attention toward the SEC Championships, slated for April 17-19 at St. Simons Island.
“We had bright spots with Johnny Newnham and Ben Follet-Smith 's 68s, but we just did not finish the way we wanted to,” MSU coach Clay Homan said.
Competing as an individual, freshman Johnny Newnham shot an even-par 72 in the second round before firing a career-best 68 in the third to finish in a tie for eighth.
Ben Wood, an 18-hole co-leader, finished the second round with a 71 before shooting a third round 74, placing him in a tie for 11th.
The other 18-hole co-leader, Tim Walker, shot identical 73 in both rounds to add a third Bulldog in the Top 15, finishing in a tie for 13th.
Zimbabwe native Ben Follett-Smith followed up his first round of 74 to fire a career best 68 in the third round to finish tied for 36th.
Tied with Follett-Smith is individual competitor Fletcher Johnson, who shot a 74 in both rounds.
Taylor Grant tied for 58th after carding a 71 in the first round and a 76 in the second round.

Rounding out the Bulldog team scorecard was Jackson Dick, who fired a second round 78 and third round 79 to tie him for 73rd.
TJ Morgan competed as an individual while tying for 80th following a second round 75 and a third round 78 in this final regular season rounds as a Bulldog.
Tied with Morgan, Austin Rose shot a second round 78 followed by a third round 75 in his spring debut.
“We need to get better at finishing rounds and not letting a few bad holes derail our play,” Homan said. “There is plenty we need to work on, and we'll be ready to compete for the SEC Championship.”
UAB (850) won the team title by a shot over Florida while, Southern Miss' Casey Fernandez won the individual title.
