Diamond Dawgs Drop Game Three Of Florida Series 10-5
April 20, 2015 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State could not match the offensive firepower of Florida in the final game of Super Bulldog Weekend Sunday.
The sixth-ranked Gators pounded out 12 hits and scored in five different innings to take a 10-5 win over the Bulldogs, completing a three-game Southeastern Conference series sweep at Dudy Noble Field.
“I'm a believer in breaks in baseball,” MSU head coach John Cohen said. “You have to create your own breaks and we aren't doing that right now. Florida had a couple of great defensive plays. We could have easily scored eight or nine runs. Right now, it's not happening for this team for whatever reason.
“We are going to keep competing and working at it. We just have to find a way to do a few things better. We aren't that far off.”
Florida improved to 31-10 overall and 12-6 in league play, while MSU fell to 22-19 and 6-12.
Florida first baseman Peter Alonso carried the big bat Sunday, as he collected four hits and four RBIs with two home runs. The Bulldogs used seven pitchers but could not slow the Gators down.
Down 3-0 in the fourth, MSU battled back to tie with two runs in the fourth inning and another score in the fifth inning. In the fourth inning, Jake Vickerson singled and that was followed by a two-run home run from Gavin Collins. An inning later, Brent Rooker doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Gridley.
Hits by Seth Heck and Cody Brown followed. However, a double play ended that threat and the Bulldogs never led.
A two-run home run by Alonso highlighted a four-run sixth inning as the Gators moved ahead for good. Wes Rea brought the Bulldogs within 8-5 on a two-run double in the eighth inning but that would be the last score for the Maroon and White.
MSU finished with nine hits. Vickerson, Rea and Rooker each had multiple hits.
Florida finished with 12 hits. Alonso was joined in the multiple hit column by Richie Martin and Mike Rivera, each of whom had two hits.
Taylor Lewis (2-1) picked up the win with 4.2 innings of relief work, behind starter Alex Fadeo and Danny Young.
Austin Sexton (3-4) worked into the sixth inning and took the loss for the Bulldogs.
MSU resumes play next weekend at Arkansas. The Bulldogs and Razorbacks meet at 6:35 p.m. Friday, 6:05 p.m. Saturday and 1:05 p.m. Sunday from Baum Stadium. All three games will be shown nationally on SEC Network +.
