State Unable To Take Series From No. 21 Mizzou

COLUMBIA, Mo. – For the first time this season, the Mississippi State softball team (31-12, 9-9 SEC) was unsuccessful in winning on “Toughness Sunday” as No. 21 Mizzou (26-10, 8-7 SEC) took the contest, 10-2 in five innings, on Sunday afternoon from University Field.
A pair of errors and walks allowed Mizzou to go out front early as they brought six runs across in the first after having loaded the bases twice.
The Tigers would add to their lead in the third with a solo home run to push it to 7-0.
In the fifth, the Bulldogs put a couple of their own on base and sophomore Caroline Seitz delivered with a single up the middle to make it a 7-2 ballgame after senior Julia Echols and sophomore Amanda Ivy scored.
With a chance to end the game via run rule, Mizzou did just that as a three-run home run put the score a 10-2 and sunk State in five innings.
Sophomore Alexis Silkwood (22-9) got the start for the Bulldogs and suffered the loss as she surrendered seven runs, six earned, on five hits in 3.0 innings of work. Tori Finucane (14-6) went 5.0 innings for the Tigers and recorded the win as she allowed two runs on three hits.
MSU will play its fifth-straight game against a ranked opponent when No. 22 South Alabama comes to Starkville on Wednesday, April 15. First pitch is set for 8 p.m. CT and the game will air nationally on the SEC Network.
