State Rallies, But Falls To No. 22 South Alabama, 3-2

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Playing its fifth-straight game against a ranked opponent, the Mississippi State softball team (31-13) rallied, but dropped its contest with No. 22 South Alabama (32-7), 3-2, on Wednesday night at the MSU Softball Field.
“It was a great game against a great team, and we will regroup before we play another good team this weekend,” head coach Vann Stuedeman said.
The pitching staffs on both sides controlled the game early on as they escaped multiple situations with runners on. In the top of the fourth, the Jags plated first run of the game on a close play at the plate after a ground out.
USA added to their lead in the fifth with a two-run single off the left-field wall, pushing their lead to 3-0.
The Bulldogs would begin their comeback effort in the fifth as sophomore Caroline Seitz provided a single up the middle to score junior Loryn Nichols and make it a 3-1 game.
A strong start to the inning with back-to-back singles allowed a fly out to center from junior Kayla Winkfield to serve as a sacrifice fly that scored redshirt freshman and pinch runner Madison Arroyo to score, bringing the score to 3-2.
With two runners on via walk and two outs in the seventh inning, State looked to make another comeback, but the Jags locked in to secure the 3-2 win in a game that aired on the SEC Network.
Sophomore Alexis Silkwood (22-10) tossed the complete game for MSU and received the loss as she allowed three runs on just four hits in 7.0 innings inside the circle. For USA, Kalen McGill (14-1) got the start and the win as she went 5.0 innings and allowed two runs, one earned. Farish Beard (1) earned the save for South Alabama.
State will welcome No. 12 Tennessee for a three-game series set for Super Bulldog Weekend. The action will begin on Friday, April 17 at 5:30 p.m. CT.
