March 07, 2015 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – After opening conference play by dropping a pair of top 25 matchups on the road last weekend, the 59th-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis team rebounded in a big way on Friday, defeating Missouri 4-0 in its SEC home opener.
With the win, Mississippi State improved to 10-3 on the season and 1-2 in conference play. The Bulldogs have also started 7-0 at home for the first time since the 2004-05 season.
State got things kicked off with a strong start in doubles, as Jasmine Lee and Georgiana Patrasc defeated MU's tandem of Kelli Hine and Madison Rhyner 8-3 on court two. Moments later, Martina Frantova and Naomi Tran delivered the match clincher at No. 1, taking an 8-5 decision against Brianna Lashway and Cassidy Spearman.
Doubles play was then suspended following the clinch, with Timea Guibe and Louise Ronaldson trailing 7-4 to Brittany Lashway and Beatriz Machado Santos on court 3.
MSU kept the momentum going into singles play, as Lee took a quick 6-0, 6-2 decision at No. 2 against MU's Cassidy Spearman. The Bulldogs followed with another victory on court three, as Frantova defeated the Tigers' Santos 6-3, 6-1.
However, one of the most impressive victories came at the No. 4 position, as Ronaldson fought back from a 3-0 deficit in the first set to take a solid 6-3, 6-4 victory against Missouri's Brianna Lashway. The win gave Ronaldson her second match-clinching victory of the season.
Singles play was suspended with Patrasc up 6-1, 5-5 on court one, Jennifer Brown trailing 7-5, 4-1 on No. 5, and Guibe leading 6-4, 5-1 at No. 6.
“I am very proud of the way we competed today,” said MSU coach Daryl Greenan. “We did a good job in getting the doubles point and we were able to carry that momentum into singles. Missouri is a solid team and they tried to rally, but we just never gave them a chance to get into the match.”
Mississippi State will now turn its focus to Sunday, as the Bulldogs host No. 44 Arkansas at the Pitts Tennis Centre. The Razorbacks have started the season at 11-4 overall and 1-0 in SEC play. Live stats will be provided on hailstate.com.
