March 09, 2015 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Rainy weather made its intrusion to the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre on Sunday, but even two rain delays and a move indoors couldn't stop the No. 59 Mississippi State women's tennis team from earning its biggest win of the season thus far, scoring a 4-1 victory against No. 44 Arkansas.
With the win, Mississippi State improved to 11-3 on the season and 2-2 in conference play. State also improved to 8-0 on the season at home and reached the 100-overall win mark in singles for the first time since the 2004-05 season.
MSU wasted no time getting on the board in doubles, as the duo of Jasmine Lee and Georgiana Patrasc blanked the Arkansas tandem of Makenzie Craft and Mia Jurasic, 8-0, on court two. The win there also handed the Razorback duo their first SEC loss of the season. The doubles clinch came shortly thereafter at No. 3, as the MSU pair of Timea Guibe and Louise Ronaldson claimed its second SEC win of the season in an 8-3 defeat against UA's Nicole Breaux and Oleksandra Shkorupeieva.
Doubles play was then suspended following the clinch, with Martina Frantova and Naomi Tran locked in a 6-6 tie on court one against the Arkansas duo of Shannon Hudson and Yuliya Lysa.
State carried over the momentum into singles, claiming the first set in five of the six matches. Frantova was first on the board in singles, taking an impressive 6-3, 6-3 victory on No. 3 against Craft. Lee followed seconds later on court two, defeating Hudson 6-1, 6-1. However, the Razorbacks were able to take the match at No. 1, as 75th-ranked Patrasc fell 6-3, 6-2 to UA's Yuliya Lysa and MSU led 3-1 at that point.
Following two rain delays that lasted over an hour and half combined, the conclusion of the match was finally moved indoors to McCarthy Gym. There, freshman Jennifer Brown sealed the win for the Bulldogs on No. 5, earning her third team-clinch of the season with a 7-5, 6-3 win against Jurasic.
Singles play was suspended with Ronaldson trailing 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 at No. 4 and Guibe up 6-3, 0-2 on court 6.
“This was a huge win for us today,” said coach Daryl Greenan. “I am so proud of the way we played. Our doubles was outstanding and we carried that over into singles. Then, Jennifer Brown showed excellent poise in picking up a huge match-clinching win.”
Mississippi State will return to action on Friday, March 13, as the Bulldogs host No. 39 Auburn at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre. The match is slated for a 4 p.m. CT start, with live stats being provided via hailstate.com.
