Bulldogs End Regular Season With Second-Place Finish
March 29, 2015 | Women's Golf
Baton Rouge, La. – In the final tournament of the regular season, the Mississippi State women's golf team kept its Top 10 finish streak alive by concluding the LSU Tiger Classic as runner-up in the 16-team field.
The Bulldogs bested the Tigers by nine shots in the final round for the lowest score of the day (293), but it wasn't enough to make up the 14-shot deficit entering Sunday's play.
Behind the leadership of seniors Rica Tse and Ally McDonald, the 11th-ranked Bulldogs fired a three-day total 884, highlighted by Saturday's 285, the second-best round since the University Course's renovation.
Individually, Tse ended the 54-hole event tied for first with LSU's Elise Bradley at 214, but lost in the sudden death playoff on the second hole.
Just five strokes ahead Mississippi State, host LSU collected the win.
To date, this marks the best regular-season finish in Mississippi State golf history. Brown-Lemm, now in her fifth year at the helm, guided her team as high as No. 1 in the rankings, according to birdiefire.com.
“I'm extremely pleased with our performance for the entire event. We gave it all we had and continue to beat and set new records,” MSU coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said. “Rica was overdue for her top place as an individual. Losing on the second sudden death hole was tough, but she had a phenomenal tournament. I'm very proud of her.”
Behind Tse was classmate McDonald, who finished tied for fourth with a 218 scorecard.
Joining the two seniors in the Top 10 was sophomore Jessica Peng, who finished one stroke over McDonald, firing a 219 to finished tied for seventh.
Sophomore Ji Eun Baik shot an 80 on the day, finishing tied for 50th.
Finishing under par on the front nine, Blaise Carabello shaved four stokes off of her Saturday total ending the event firing a 239.
Individual Izel Pieters finished tied for 54 and shot 80.
The Bulldogs next stop is the SEC tournament in Birmingham on April 17-19.
