Mobile, Ala. – In it's first completive rounds of 2015, the Mississippi State men's golf team led by Johnny Newnham and Taylor Grant is tied for 11th place after 36 holes at the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate.
Newnham shot a first round one-over-par 73 to finish the first round in ninth place. In the second round the Jamaica native carded a 76 to finish tied for 26th heading into Tuesday.
Also tied for 26th is a fellow freshman, Grant maked his MSU debut shooting a 78 in his first round before rifling a 71 in the second round.
“I really saw some good things out of our two freshmen, Johnny and Taylor,” said MSU coach Clay Homan. “They are both trending in the right direction.”
Junior Tim Walker carded a first round 77 before turning in a 76 second round putting him in a tie for 47th.
Jackson Dick recorded a 78 after the first 18 holes and a 75 after the second to start him in a tie for 60th Tuesday morning.
Two-time winner this season, Ben Wood is also tied for 60th after shooting a first round of 81 before turning in a second round card of 76.
“Certainly a tough day with the conditions being cold and breezy,” said Homan. “In round one, we just didn't make any birdies, so every mistake just added up. I thought we played a little better in round two throughout the lineup.”
Competing in the individual tournament, Freshman Taylor shot a 149 placing him in fifth. Ben Follet-Smith carded a 156 putting him in a tie for 16th. T.J. Morgan hit a 159 tying him for 19th.
Host South Alabama holds a one shot lead over second place Ole Miss. Tyler Saunders form Texas State is a top the individual leaderboard with three shot lead over Matt Gilchrest from Auburn.
MSU will tee-up the third and final round Tuesday morning at 8:30 am.
