Moberly, Pieters Help Pace The Bulldogs In Texas
October 05, 2015 | Women's Golf
Boerne, Texas – Playing the front nine holes exceptionally well on Sunday, Elsa Moberly and Izel Pieters paced Mississippi State in the opening round of the Jim West Challenge.
The Bulldogs shot a 295 and enter Monday's second round in eighth place. Texas A&M and Kent State sit atop the leaderboard at 285, while MSU is just five shots away from 3rd.
“We had a good front nine, but did not have a good back nine. Jessica Peng and Ji Eun Baik didn't play to their expectations today, and I'm thrilled the others picked up some slack,” coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said. “We threw a good 10 shots out, but we practiced hard and maybe we have some things ironed out.”
Moberly, a freshman, keeps proving herself. After another solid round of play, she recorded four birdies and to tie the team lead with a 73 (+1).
Pieters also turned in a 73 and the two are tied for 17th.
Freshman Bianca Theron led the tournament for a stent, shooting two-under-par on the front nine. She finished with a 74 and is currently tied for 26th.
Juniors Jessica Peng and Ji Eun Baik fired 75 and are tied for 36th.
Freshman Katie Holt, playing in her first colligate tournament, totaled a 74 as an individual.
“Katie, in her debut, had a solid 74, and we are proud of that. Experience is critical for development, and she did great,” Brown-Lemm said.
