STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State (6-2, 2-2 SEC) cruised past Kentucky (4-3, 2-3) 42-16 on Saturday night in Davis Wade Stadium. The win concluded a three-game homestand for the Bulldogs, all of them wins.
Kentucky scored first, a touchdown on its second drive, but from there it was all MSU as the Wildcats never again sniffed the end zone. MSU finished the game on a 42-6 run and became bowl-eligible for the sixth-straight season.
“We talked about wanting to play a more complete game in all three phases,” head coach Dan Mullen said. “I think we did that tonight. I think that was our bets game in all three phases we've played all year.
Senior quarterback Dak Prescott was the star of the night, completing 25-of-35 passes for 348 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed 13 times for 117 yards and three scores, his first time to break 100 yards on the ground this season. With his six total touchdowns, Prescott tied former MSU quarterback Jackie Parker's single-game record at MSU.
“He probably could just go and not even pay attention to me,” Mullen joked about his quarterback.
Defensively, MSU was led by senior cornerback and captain Taveze Calhoun, whose two interceptions were his first of the year and helped seal the victory for MSU.
After both teams enjoy an off week next weekend, Mississippi State travels to meet Missouri on Thursday, November 5. The game will kickoff at 8 p.m. CT and be televised by ESPN. It will be the teams' first meeting since 1984, and also the first since the Tigers joined the SEC in 2012.
