AUBURN, Ala. – Junior Rishab Agarwal advanced to the final round of the Southeastern Conference Invitational on Saturday after downing two top-notch opponents in the singles A Draw.
Along with Agarwal, freshmen Niclas Braun and Lucas Sanchez each advanced to the singles consolations of their respective brackets.
“This was one of the best days of the fall so far,” MSU coach Matt Roberts said. “Everyone competed so hard today and showed great confidence in the pressure moments. They are starting to see what competing truly means.”
Agarwal began his day with a comeback win against Vanderbilt's Cameron Klinger, 1-6, 7-5, 7-6, before ousting Tennessee's Luis Valero, 6-3, 7-6. The junior will face Florida's Elliot Orkin in the final round on Sunday.
For Braun his path to the finals of the singles A consolation bracket, was propelled by two victories against Arkansas opponents. The first came against Johan den Toom, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, with his second win coming against Santiago Munoz, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3. Braun will face another Razorback on Sunday in Jose Salazar.
Sanchez advanced to the final round of the singles B consolation with wins against Tennessee's Sunay Bhat and Marshall Sullivan. Sanchez earned his first victory via withdrawal and followed it with a 6-3, 6-1 clincher in his second match. The freshman will face UT's Jess Jones at noon in the final round.
The pairing of Braun and Hunter reached the final of the doubles A consolation, after a victory against Alabama's doubles team, 8-4. Agarwal and Foshey lost to Vanderbilt's tandem in the quarterfinal of the doubles B draw.
Looking past the SEC Invite, the Bulldogs will have upcoming futures events in Birmingham, Ala., (Oct. 30-Nov.6) and Niceville, Fla., (Nov. 6-13) left on tap for the fall campaign.
