MSU Completes Day One of Purdue Invite
October 02, 2015 | Women's Tennis
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – After the first day of play at the Purdue Invite, the Mississippi State women's tennis is 3-2 in doubles play and 3-3 in singles play.
Play on Friday was moved indoors due to high winds. With a limited number of courts, the Bulldogs played for 13 hours.
“The highlight of the day was Anastasia Rentouli and Georgiana Patrasc winning their way into the semi-finals of doubles,” MSU head coach Daryl Greenan said. “Rentouli also won her singles match and remains undefeated in tournament play this fall with a combined singles and doubles record of 9-0. I thought everyone fought hard today, even if they didn't play to their full potential.”
Doubles play started off with the MSU tandem of sophomore Harrison and freshman Caroline Kelly defeating Illinois' Madie Baillon and Jaclyn Switkes 6-2. They were later defeated by Notre Dame's duo of Mary Closs and Allison Miller 6-3. The State duo will face off Saturday against Iowa's Zoe Douglas and Natalie Looney.
State's duo of senior Patrasc and freshman Rentouli fininshed the day undefeated after defeating Illinois' Daniela Pedraza Novak and Jade Hilton 6-1 and Louisville's Sena Suswam and Olivia Boesing 6-0. They will face off with Notre Dame's Mary Closs and Allison Miller in the semifinals on Saturday.
MSU's tandem of sophomores Louise Ronaldson and Kristina Vozniak fell to Michigan State's Athena Trouillot and Davina Nguyen 6-3. Either sophomore Jennifer Brown or Ronaldson and Vozniak will match up with Purdue's Deborah Suarez and Marta Ruedas-Burgos on Saturday.
The singles session proceeded after the doubles session was completed.
State's 83rd-ranked Patrasc fell to Kansas' Anastasiya Rychagova 6-2, 6-3. She will play against Notre Dame's Allison Miller on Saturday. MSU's Harrison came from behind to defeat Notre Dame's Mary Closs 2-6, 7-5, 7-5. She will match up with Michigan State's Lexi Bayliss tomorrow.
The Bulldog newcomer Rentouli remained undefeated after beating Memphis' Kathryn Hughes 7-5, 6-2. Tomorrow she will face Purdue's Andjela Djokovic. State's Vozniak fell to Michigan State's Davina Nguyen 7-6(5), 6-3. On Saturday she is set to play Miami of Ohio's Andrea Badileanu.
Brown won in straight sets against Miami's Hannah Shteyn 6-4, 6-4. Either she or sophomore Louise Ronaldson will match up with Illinois' Jaclyn Switkes tomorrow. MSU's Kelly fell to Miami's Ana Rajkovic 7-5, 6-3. She will face off with Louisville's Abbie Pahz on Saturday.
