MSU Completes Day One Of Southern Regional; Agarwal Continues Run

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Freshmen Lucas Sanchez and Trevor Foshey picked up singles wins on Thursday as Mississippi State wrapped up day one action of the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships from the Alabama Tennis Stadium.
The freshman pair each claimed straight-set victories against Jacksonville State foes. Sanchez downed Austin McCormick, 7-5, 6-1, while Foshey finished off Vinivio Hadlich, 6-4, 6-4. Junior Vaughn Hunter and freshman Niclas Braun earned first-round byes.
In the second round Hunter dropped a tough three-set contest to LSU's Justin Butsch, 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4, while the trio of Braun, Foshey and Sanchez all dropped straight-set matches. Hunter and Braun will compete in the singles consolation tomorrow.
Doubles play will begin on Friday for the Maroon and White , with the team of Foshey-Braun competiting.
Agarwal Continues Hot Streak At Houston Futures
Junior Rishab Agarwal downed Alexander Ritschard, 6-3, 7-6, to advance to the Houston Futures quarterfinals on Friday.
“I'm so excited to see Rishab get another huge win in Houston,” MSU coach Matt Roberts said. “It's a big-time win because his opponent played for a very good Virginia squad as recently as last season.”
Ritschard, a former Virginia Cavalier, owns 29 wins on the ITF Pro Circuit main draw while earning a career-high 648 ATP ranking.
Agarwal has defeated five opponents in Houston at the Futures event, with an upcoming showdown against No. 2 seed Matt Reid on Friday.
