STARKVILLE, Miss. – With the fall season in full swing, Mississippi State heads to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the ITA Southern Region Championships hosted by the University of Alabama.
The five-day tournament is set to begin on Thursday with doubles action starting at 9 a.m. CT, and singles at 10 a.m. Winners of the regional will advance to the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing, N.Y., on Nov. 12-15.
“We've always enjoyed this tournament because it gives our team a lot of tough matches to learn from,” MSU coach Matt Roberts said. “Everyone on our team is working on something new in their game, whether it be technical or mental. So we are excited to play some excellent competition.”
MSU has won a singles or doubles championship the last three years of the Southern Regional. Most recently, the Bulldogs claimed the doubles title in 2014, with singles championships coming in 2012 and 2013.
The Maroon and White will send freshmen Niclas Braun, Trevor Foshey and Lucas Sanchez to Tuscaloosa, with junior Vaughn Hunter rounding out the lineup.
Agarwal Advances At Futures
Junior Rishab Agarwal continued his tear in Houston, Texas, as the Bulldog downed Tigre Hank, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, in the main draw opening round. Hank is ranked No. 534 overall in the current ATP singles rankings and was the No. 7 seed. Agarwal had defeated three opponents in the qualifying draw over the weekend to advance to Wednesday's main draw.
“I am proud of Rishab's performance at the Houston Futures,” Roberts said. “He had a good win today and it shows how much work he has put in over the offseason by the results he is producing.”
