PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – With two win over top 20 foes Friday, Mississippi State's Jasmine Lee moved on to the semifinals of the consolation draw of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships. The tournament is the second major of the college tennis season.
State's 23rd-ranked junior first faced off with Southern California's 10th-ranked Giuliana Olmos (seeded fourth in consolation). Lee cruised in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, to notch her first career victory over an opponent ranked in the top 10 nationally.
In the quarterfinals Friday night, Lee battled LSU's 20th-ranked Joana Vale Costa. After Lee claimed the first set 6-2, Vale Costa was forced to retire due to an injury, advancing MSU's All-SEC star to Saturday's semifinals.
Lee will match up with UCLA's 22nd-ranked Catherine Harrison in the main draw's consolation semifinals Saturday at 1 p.m. CT.
“Jasmine had another great day today,” assistant coach Sachin Kirtane said. “She was able to dig in today despite the hot weather conditions and beat two tough competitors. Today is the best she has played all week, so you can tell her game in improving each day she plays. We are excited about coming out again tomorrow and representing Mississippi State with pride.”
Lee is now 5-1 at the All-American this week with four top 70 wins (two in the top 20) and her only loss coming in the main draw to the top-seeded (second-ranked) player in the event.
