Brinker Breaks School Record In Season Opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Day one of the UAB Blazer Invitational led to success for both Mississippi State track and field teams as three athletes donned a first-place finish and one senior broke a school record.
Senior Ebony Brinker had a leap of 42-04.25 in the triple jump to not only earn first place, but to also break the MSU indoor record (previously 42-04). Jason Harper also saw success in the triple jump as he earned a first-place finish with a leap of 52-03.25.
Abigail Dill also recorded a first-place showing in the high jump with a jump of 5-06.50.
“We had some strong performances today,” MSU coach Steve Dudley said. “We're going up against some really great teams, and we'll have to continue to bring our best again tomorrow."
Making her MSU debut, Tiffany Flynn found her way into the MSU record books with the third best leap in the triple jump in school history after earning a second-place finish (42-02) behind Brinker.
On the track, Ste'yce McNeil qualified for the finals tomorrow with a time of 8.10 in the 60-meter hurdles. In the men's 60-meter hurdles, Jovan Davis (3rd, 8.12) and Wesley White (8th, 8.22) both qualified for the finals.
In the men's 500-meter dash, Dustin James II ran a time of 1:04.58 to earn third place. James was immediately followed by teammates Steve Shoto (4th, 1:04.81) and Scottie Hearn (5th, 1:05.25).
Junior Rodrigo Rocha also qualified for tomorrow's finals in the 60-meter dash after earning a seventh-place finish (6.93).
The Bulldogs had nine athletes compete in the men's 300-meter dash with Charles Taylor leading the way in third place (35.06).
Action will resume tomorrow in Birmingham, Ala. Running and field events are both set to begin at 9 a.m.
