MSU?s Wood Records Top 10 Card At Shoal Creek Intercollegiate
September 30, 2014 | Men's Golf
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Another solid round secured junior Ben Wood his second-straight Top 10 finish as Mississippi State men's golf wrapped the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate Tuesday afternoon.
After shooting a 1-under par 143 through Monday's opening two rounds, Wood followed it with a 2-over-par 74 Tuesday to tie for 10th with a 1-over 217.
Behind Wood's solid play, MSU made up for a tough second round to finish in 11th place with a 925.
“Our performance this week was nowhere near what it needs to be. We really struggled putting the ball in play off the tee and when you cannot do that it makes this game pretty hard,' coach Clay Homan said. “Ben continues to play very well and his consistency has been outstanding.”
Junior Tim Walker fired a 3-over-par 75 Tuesday to tie for 50th with a 15-over 231.
Fellow Australia native Jackson Dick shot a 7-over-par 79 to end the event with a 236 that tied for 58th.
Junior Fletcher Johnson's final-round 85 put him in 64th place with a 248 for the tournament.
Freshman Taylor Bibbs rounded out the Bulldog lineup, shooting a 78 to finish 65th with a 252.
Competing as an individual, Johnny Newnham wrapped his first tournament of the year with a 5-over-par 77 to tie for 56th (235).
North Florida won the team title with a 5-under-par 859, and it also had the top individual as Joey Petronio fired a final-round 66 to win with an 11-under 205.
“We will work even harder to correct some of the problems and issues and bounce back,” Homan said.
MSU returns to Birmingham Oct. 6-7 to play in the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate at Old Overton Club.
