MSU?s Wood Shares 36-Hole Lead At Jerry Pate Intercollegiate
October 07, 2014 | Men's Golf
VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala - Ben Wood sits in a tie for the clubhouse lead while Mississippi State stands in 10th place following Monday's opening two rounds of the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate.
Wood, the Florence, Ala. native, shot a 1-over-par 71 in the first round before rifling a 7-under-par 63, that included five birdies on the front nine, over the day's final 18 holes. Florida State's Hank Lebioda and Georgia Tech's Ollie Schniederjans join Wood atop the leaderboard.
“Ben was outstanding today, especially in the second round,” MSU coach Clay Homan said. “Heading into tomorrow, he will have another great chance to win again.”
Junior Tim Walker carded a 6-over-par 146 to tie for 34th. Fellow Australian Jackson Dick shot a 9-over 149 to sit in a tie for 43rd.
In his first action of the season, senior T.J. Morgan improved on a first round 77 to card a second round 75. Morgan finished his first two rounds with a 12-over-par 152 and tied for 49th.
Ben Follet-Smith rounded out the Bulldog scorecard with a 17-over-par 157, putting him in a tie for 57th.
“Today, we did enough things well to shoot some low numbers, which is an improvement,” Homan said. “We have to eliminate those one or two holes where we make a double or triple bogey and loose our momentum.”
Alabama holds a 10-stroke lead over the rest of the field heading into the third and final round.
MSU tees it up for the final 18 holes Tuesday at 8:00 a.m.
