September 21, 2014 | Women's Tennis
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – After pulling out five wins in Saturday's action, the Mississippi State women's tennis team wrapped up play in the Mizzou Invite by taking five singles victories over Nebraska on Sunday in six contests staged after a tough morning of doubles against Missouri.
MSU began the morning with a round of doubles play against the host Tigers, but were swept by MU on all three courts. The State duo of Alex Corder and Naomi Tran battled hard but fell 8-6 to Missouri's tandem of Kelli Hine and Brittany Lashway. MSU's freshman duo of Jennifer Brown and Louise Ronaldson were defeated by an 8-1 margin by Beatriz Machado Santos and Cassidy Spearman, while Timea Guibe and Georgiana Patrasc fell by the same score to Alex Clark and Brianna Lashway.
Mississippi State would rebound nicely in singles action, wrapping up the weekend against Nebraska, with Bulldog freshmen claiming three of MSU's five singles victories. Ronaldson solidified her weekend sweep in singles, earning her third individual win over NU's Mary Hanna in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. Meanwhile, Brown earned her second career singles win, defeating Husker Mackenna Maddox, 6-3, 6-4. Rookie Alex Corder picked up her first collegiate singles victory, defeating Katerina Matysova, 6-1, 6-3.
Also earning victories for MSU on the day were the 42nd-ranked All-SEC star Patrasc and the senior Tran, who defeated Maggy Lehmicke, 6-1, 6-4, and Lauren Wagner, 6-1, 6-0, respectively.
For the weekend, State's Patrasc was selected to the Mizzou Invite all-tournament team for singles, while the Bulldog duo of Martina Frantova and Tran were selected to the team in doubles.
"Overall, it was a positive first tournament for us,” said coach Daryl Greenan. “Our results were very solid this weekend against good competition. I was impressed with our doubles play and I think our freshmen did a great job in their first college event.”
Players from Mississippi State will compete in two events over the next couple of weeks, with Patrasc and Frantova entered into the ITA Riviera All-American Championships in Pacific Palasides, Calif., from Sept. 27-Oct. 5. Meanwhile, the remainder of the squad will compete in the Arizona Invite in Tucson Oct. 3-5.
