MSU Women's Tennis Completes Day Two Of Play At Mizzou Invite
September 20, 2014 | Women's Tennis
MSU began the first round of doubles Saturday morning by taking two out of three contests from Columbia. The senior and sophomore combo of Martina Frantova and Naomi Tran defeated Kanika Vaidya and Adi Milstein, 8-5, for their third doubles victory of the weekend. Joining them in the win column were Timea Guibe and Louise Ronaldson, who cruised past CU's Alexandra Solovyev and Vivian Cheng, 8-1.
Jennifer Brown and Georgiana Patrasc almost pulled out a win as well versus the Lions, but suffered a tough 8-7(5) defeat at the hands of Crystal Lueng and Rima Asatrian. MSU freshman Alex Corder also saw action Saturday, teaming up with Nebraska's Lauren Wagner, but the duo fell 8-3 to Columbia's Laura MacMullin and Amy Li.
In the next doubles round against Nebraska, it was the State freshmen who stole the show. All three of MSU's freshmen earned doubles victories, as the Bulldogs took two out of three from the Huskers. Frantova and Ronaldson defeated the duo of Maggy Lehmicke and Mackenna Maddox, 8-5, while Brown and Corder combined for an 8-4 win over Lisa Andersson and Laura Wagner. Meanwhile, Patrasc and Tran almost gave the Bulldogs another doubles sweep, but came up just short in a close 8-7(3) battle to NU's Mary Hanna and Izabella Zgierska.
MSU would close out the day by facing the host Missouri in singles, where the rookie Ronaldson would earn her second career singles victory in the Maroon and White, defeating Brittany Lashway in a great comeback on court 4, 6-7(3), 6-1, 6-3. However, the Bulldogs would suffer losses on the other five courts, including 42nd-ranked Georgiana Patrasc at No. 1, who fell 6-3, 7-5 to Kelli Hine.
"Our doubles was the highlight for the second day in a row," said coach Daryl Greenan. “We struggled in a few singles matches today, but the level was high and we are getting the challenges we need.”
Mississippi State will close out the Mizzou Invite on Sunday, playing a round of doubles at 9 a.m. CT against Missouri, and a round of singles against Nebraska at 10:30 a.m.
