Peng, Bulldogs Fourth Following Mason Rudolph Opening Round
September 20, 2014 | Women's Golf
FRANKLIN, Tenn. - Jessica Peng continued her hot start to the season as the Mississippi State women's golf team put itself in in the Top 5 following the opening round of play at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Franklin, Tenn., Friday.
Just three days removed from a seventh-place finish at the season-opening Cougar Classic, Peng opened Friday at the Legends Club with a 70 that tied for fourth, two shots back of clubhouse leader Elise Bradley of LSU. Peng had 7 birdies, including a stretch of three-straight, to finish the opening round at 2-under.
Her stellar day led the Bulldogs to a 4-over-par 292 that put them as one of four SEC teams in the Top 5. State enters Saturday seven shots off leader LSU. Host Vanderbilt sat in second, just ahead of Chattanooga, MSU and Alabama.
“It's a great feeling to not play our best and still be in contention. You can't win a tournament on the first day, but you can lose it,” MSU coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said.
Logan Chaney picked up where she left off in Charleston, S.C., carding a second-straight 73 to sit in a tie for 16th position. Shaving 9 strokes off her last first round start at the Cougar Classic, Chaney sits in at NO. 16 this event.
Ji Eun Baik joined Peng and Chaney in the Top 25 as she opened play with a 2-over 74. Seniors Rica Tse and Ally McDonald followed with identical 3-over 75s to stand in a tie for 33rd.
Tse begins MSU's second round at 8:50 a.m. Saturday.
