September 17, 2014 | Men's Golf
CORDOVA, Tenn. – A final-round 71 gave junior Ben Wood his first-career win as the Mississippi State men's golf team claimed a fifth-place finish at the Memphis Intercollegiate in Cordova, Tenn.
Wood's 1-under final round gave him a 5-under 211 and one-stroke victory over Louisiana Tech's Victor Lange.
“I was very happy for Ben to pick up his first collegiate win,” coach Clay Homan said. “He played well not only today but for three consecutive rounds.”
Wood's stellar play led a Bulldog squad that fired a final-round 304 and finished with 54-hole total of 17-over 881. Despite the final-day struggles, MSU clinched its fifth Top-5 showing in the team's last eight tournaments dating back to last season.
Competing as an individual, junior Fletcher Johnson shot a final-round 77 to finish in a tie for sixth at 1-over 217. Johnson claimed the best three-round total and finish of his career.
Despite firing a final-round 77, freshman Taylor Bibbs picked up his first-career Top 25 finish with a 5-over-par 221 that tied for 20th.
Junior college transfer Tim Walker tied for 32nd with an 8-over 224 after shooting a 78 in Tuesday's final round.
Sophomore Jackson Dick carded an 80 Tuesday to finish the three-round event tied for 48th at 11-over-par 227. Austin Rose shared 51st position with a 12-over-par 228 after firing a final-round 78.
Louisiana Tech won the team title with a 7-over-par 871, two shots better than host Memphis.
The Maroon and White returns to the links September 29 as it heads to Birmingham to play in the Shoal Creek Invitational hosted by Graeme McDowell.
