Johnson, Wood Tied For Memphis Intercollegiate Lead
September 15, 2014 | Men's Golf
CORDOVA, Tenn. – Ben Wood and Fletcher Johnson tied for the clubhouse lead while Mississippi State sat in third following Monday's opening two rounds of the Memphis Intercollegiate.
Wood followed a 1-under 71 with a 3-under 69 to tie Johnson, who opened with back-to-back 70s as an individual competitor. The pair was joined in the clubhouse lead by Louisiana Tech's Victor Lange.
Although Johnson's score did not count toward the team tally, Wood and his teammates managed to fire a 1-over 577 to sit in third place, two back of leader and host Memphis.
“It's great to see Fletcher and Ben atop the individual leaderboard,” coach Clay Homan said. “I thought tee to green we played well today. We still need to eliminate those short missed putts, but overall we put ourselves in a good position for tomorrow. I expect the hole locations to be a little tougher, so we will need to be sharp in all areas.”
Freshman Taylor Bibbs put himself in contention for his first Top 10 card, shooting rounds of 73 and 71 to sit in a tie for 10th at even-par 144.
Another newcomer, junior Tim Walker, shot a 3-over 147 that was good enough to tie for 18th place after 36 holes.
Jackson Dick improved his second-round score one shot, firing a 73 to finish tied for 21st at 3-over-par 147.
Tupelo native Austin Rose rounded out the lineup, tying for 44th position with a 6-over 150.
The Bulldogs tee off Tuesday's final round at 9:20 a.m. alongside the two teams ahead of them on the leaderboard, Memphis and Louisiana Tech.
