Peng, McDonald Lead MSU To Sixth After Cougar Classic First Round
September 15, 2014 | Women's Golf
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Battling rainy conditions and lightning delays, Mississippi State's Jessica Peng and Ally McDonald each turned in Top 15 cards as the Bulldogs ended the opening round of the Cougar Classic in sixth place.
Backed by a 4-under-par 68 from Peng and a 1-under 71 from McDonald, MSU fired a 1-over 289 to sit just seven shots of clubhouse leader Wake Forest (282, -6).
Peng, a Taoyuan, Taiwan, native, bogeyed the sixth, but proceeded to birdie her final two holes to make the turn at 1-under. She was stellar on the back nine, carding a 3-under 33 to sit in second place, three back of leader Sierra Sims of Wake Forest.
McDonald, MSU's two-time all-American, finished the day tied for 14th. The Fulton, Miss., native had a bogey on No. 5, but ended the front nine with a birdie. She added birdies on Nos. 12 and 15 before closing with a birdie on the 18th to end the day at 1-under.
Ji Eun Baik put herself one shot out of the Top 25 as she ended the day tied for 31st at 1-over 73.
“We had a good start today in spite of the weather. The weather didn't cooperate as we delayed by lightning a few times,” Brown-Lemm said. “Jessica played very well and had a great mindset. It is great to see our mental work pay off consistently. Ally and Ji Eun worked very hard as nothing came easy for them today. They rallied together as a squad, but we left shots out there and intend to do a better job in the two remaining rounds.”
Senior Rica Tse carded a 77 to end the opening round in a tie for 80th. Junior Logan Chaney turned in an 82 in her Cougar Classic debut to round out the Bulldog lineup.
Monday's second round will be foursomes, with MSU teeing off with Virginia and N.C. State on holes 7-9.
