November 02, 2014 | Women's Tennis
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – After falling in the semifinal round of the Titia Wilmink Draw, the Mississippi State duo of Jennifer Brown and Timea Guibe bounced back to take the 3rd place match on Saturday in the Roberta Alison Fall Classic.
Brown and Guibe fell in the semifinals 8-5 to Michigan's Mira Ruder-Hook and Annie Wierda. The duo then advanced to the 3rd place match, defeating Trang Huynh and Sanae Ohta of Troy, 8-1. With this weekend's victories, Brown and Guibe finish the fall with a 6-3 record as a team.
Meanwhile, in the Mari Muller Draw, the Bulldog tandem of Alex Corder and Naomi Tran rebounded from Friday's opening round loss to take an 8-5 decision against Tulane's Jacqui Katz and Vanessa Nommenson in the first round of consolation play. The win advanced the pair to the consolation championship, where they dropped a tough 8-6 battle to Middle Tennessee's Jesse Grace and Brittany Huxley.
Mississippi State would wrap up doubles action in the Melissa Minor Draw, as Georgiana Patrasc and Louise Ronaldson began the day with an 8-1 loss to host Alabama's Danielle Spielmann and Emily Zabor in the first round of consolation play. The pair would then bounce back for an 8-6 victory against Tulane's Naz Karagoz and Kyla Klier in the 7th place match.
In singles action, Guibe capitalized on Friday's consolation victory by taking the consolation championship in the Jane Phillips Draw, defeating Marija Milutinovic of Ole Miss, 6-0, 6-1. Tran was also victorious in the 3rd place match of the Dominique Glinzler Draw, taking a 6-0, 6-4 decision against C.C. Mulyadi of UT Chattanooga.
In other singles action in the Alexa Guarachi Draw, 42nd-ranked junior Georgiana Patrasc fell in a tough three-set battle - 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 - to 11th-ranked Emina Bektas of Michigan.
Mississippi State wraps up the fall season with a combined 45-29 singles record, the best fall finish under sixth-year head coach Daryl Greenan. The Bulldogs also finished with a combined 23-15 mark in doubles.
"We definitely had a few solid highlights in the final event of the season," Greenan said. “Unfortunately, we were not at full strength, but it was a good effort from those who participated. I feel like we made good progress overall during the fall. We are young and have a lot of work to do before the spring, but I am excited about our potential.”
Mississippi State will open the spring dual match season on January 18, hosting a doubleheader against Alabama State and Jackson State.
