VESTIAVA HILLS, Ala. – After tying for the second-lowest round in school history Monday, Ben Wood fired the fourth-lowest round in school history to win the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate championship.
Wood followed Monday's second-round 63 with a 64 Tuesday to finish with a 198 that tied Alex Rocha's performance at the 2000 Gator Invitational for the lowest total in MSU annals.
“Ben continues to play as well as anyone in the country, and what he did this week was amazing,” said MSU coach Clay Homan.
Riding Wood's performance, MSU placed seventh with a combined score of 863, the second highest among SEC schools competing.
Tim Walker record his highest finish as a Bulldog, using an even par day to tie for 24th with a 216 total.
Sophomore Jackson Dick shot a third round 75 for a 224 total, finishing in a tie for 46th.
In his first action of the season, T.J. Morgan improved on his second round scorecard with a 73 tjat put him in 49th position.
Ben Follett-Smith rounded out the Bulldog lineup, carding a final-round 76 to finish 58th (233, +23).
“We played a pretty decent third round and achieved our goal of beating the teams that were right in front of us,” said Homan. “I saw some improvement from last week but we need to be better throughout the entire lineup.”
Alabama won the team title, besting Florida State by 13 shots.
The Maroon & White return to the links on Oct. 26 with a trip to College Grove, Tenn., to play in The Grove Intercollegiate at The Grove Country Club.
