October 31, 2014 | Women's Tennis
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – A pair of first-round singles victories from junior Georgiana Patrasc and senior Naomi Tran, along with a shutout doubles win from Jennifer Brown and Timea Guibe, highlighted Mississippi State's first day of action in the Roberta Alison Fall Classic.
Patrasc, who competed in the Alexa Guarachi Draw, opened with a 7-5, 7-5 victory against Tulane's Ipek Birol, before falling in the semifinals to Arianne Hartono of Ole Miss 6-2, 6-1. Tran competed in the Dominique Glinzler Draw and survived an intense battle against Ball State's Courtney Earnest, taking a 7-6(4), 7-5 decision, before falling to DePaul's Yasmin Kling in the semifinal round 6-2, 6-1. Patrasc and Tran will compete on Saturday in the third place match of their respective draws.
In other singles action, State's Guibe dropped a tough 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(8) decision to Michigan's Sara Remynse in the Jane Phillips Draw opener, but came from behind to take a 6-4, 6-0 victory against Loyola Marymount's Lisa Piller in consolation play. Freshman Alex Corder fell to Nayara Moraes of MTSU 7-5, 6-1 in the first round of the Jenny Ketchum Draw and was forced to withdraw in the consolation bracket due to injury.
In doubles action, which actually started play Friday, the MSU freshman-sophomore duo of Brown and Guibe rolled to an 8-0 shutout against Loyola Marymount's tandem of Julia Norlin and Anna Romeka. Brown and Guibe will move on to the semifinal round of the Titia Wilmink Draw Saturday against Mira Ruder-Hook and Annie Wierda of Michigan.
State other's two doubles entries in the tournament fell in close first-round decisions Friday.
Play will resume at 9 a.m. CT Saturday with two rounds of doubles and the final round of singles.
