MSU Places Four Golfers In Top 25 Of Mobile Bay Intercollegiate
February 19, 2013 | Men's Golf
The Bulldogs entered Tuesday's final rounds looking to secure a strong showing and they did just that. State's 291 for the second round was the third-lowest total of any team. The Maroon and White followed up that performance with a 284 for the final 18, giving MSU a tie for the fourth spot with No. 23 Wake Forest. State's fourth-place showing beat out three other ranked teams: No. 17 Vanderbilt, No. 37 Kentucky and No. 50 South Alabama.
No. 27 Auburn finished four strokes better than the field at Magnolia Groves, giving the Tigers the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate title with its 3-under-par, 861. No. 11 LSU, who was tied with MSU coming into Tuesday, finished second at 1-over-par, 865.
"I was really proud of the way we came out and played today," MSU coach Clay Homan said. "Our goal was to finish off the second round on some tough holes at even par and we did just that. I am really proud of Fletcher and Robi after a rocky start in round three, they combined to shoot six under par their final 11 holes after both being over par early. Of course Axel's 68 gave us the boost we needed and have been missing the first few rounds of the spring."
Five birdies in round three propelled junior Axel Boasson to the biggest jump of the day, after finishing 28th following Monday's play. Boasson fired off a 4-under-par, 68 for the third round to jump to number 11 at Magnolia Groves. The junior's 4-under-par was tied for the lowest score in the final round of play with LSU's Andrew Presley. Boasson finished the Mobile Bay Int. with a 2-over-par, 218.
Tupelo, Miss., native Fletcher Johnson turned in his best finish of the year with his 13th-place performance. The sophomore carded a 1-under-par, 71 for the final round to bring his total at the Mobile Bay to a 3-over-par, 219.
Junior Joe Sakulpolphaisan picked up his sixth Top 25 of the season, to remain a steady performer for MSU. Those six Top 25 finishes are the most of any Maroon and White player this season. The Thailand product finished at even for the final 18, giving him a 4-over-par, 220 in Mobile.
Fellow junior Chad Ramey was the final State player to round out the Top 25 group of Bulldogs. The Fulton, Miss., native finished tied for 22nd with his 5-over-par, 221. Ramey now has five Top 25 finishes this season.
Rounding out the MSU's scoring was senior Robi Calvesbert. The senior finished with a 6-over-par, 222 from the Mobile Bay Int., leaving him two spots shy of a Top 25 finish of his own.
State had two golfers competing in the individual tournament in Mobile as well, in freshman Ben Wood and junior Barrett Edens. Wood fired off a 7-over-par, 78 in the second and final round from Magnolia Grove Falls to leave him with a 16th-place tie. Edens shot a 10-over-par, 81 in the second round to finish 26th.
Clay Homan's squad will be back in action on March 11-12, for the Tiger Shootout hosted by the Auburn Tigers. Fan who want to keep up with all things Mississippi State golf can follow the men's golf program through Facebook at facebook.com/mstateMG and on Twitter at @mstateMG.
