PENSACOLA, Fla. – Fueled by a late third-set rally, Mississippi State men's tennis freshman Florian Lakat downed Blaze Schwartz in a three-set thriller to advance to the finals of qualifying play at the 2013 USTA Pensacola Futures on Sunday.
Schwartz took the first set from the MSU newcomer 6-3, but Lakat stormed back in the second, forcing a third set with a 6-4 second-set victory. Both players battled back-and-forth in the third, with Schwartz taking a late advantage 5-3. However, Lakat put together two crucial holds and a break to take a 6-5 advantage before Schwartz forced a tiebreaker. From there, Lakat cruised to victory, easily taking the tiebreaker and the match 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(1).
Lakat now moves to the finals to face eighth-seeded Patrick Daciek, with a trip to the tourney's main draw on the line.
