MSU Cross Country Teams Finish In Top 5 At Commodore Classic
September 15, 2012 | Cross Country
Renee Masterson (21:25.57) led the way for the Lady Bulldogs, finishing eighth in the 6K, amongst a field of more than 200 runners. Jodie McGuff (22:11.53) and Chloe Phillips (22:12.44) also had top finishes for the women, rounding out the Top 25 at 24th and 25th, respectively.
"I'm so proud of the team's performance today," Masterson said. "We improved our times and showed that we are highly competitive within the SEC."
MSU seized the fourth place finish with 117 points, beating fellow SEC opponents Alabama, Georgia, LSU, South Carolina and Tennessee. Capturing the team victory for the women was sixth-ranked Vanderbilt. In all, 24 teams competed.
"It's obvious our hard work and dedication are starting to pay off," McGuff said. "We have no doubt of fulfilling our intentions of racing side by side with whoever is up front at SEC Championships."
The men totaled 183 points to place 5th in the 24-team field after a strong 8K run from John Valentine (22nd, 25:17.22). Following Valentine's Top 25 finish were Philip Johnson (33rd, 25:36.37), Andrew Monaghan (45th, 25:54.02) and Cameron Vernier (46th, 25:54.76). The Bulldogs knocked Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt out of the top spots.
The Maroon and White squads will continue their campaign on Sept. 28 at the Notre Dame Invite in South Bend, Ind.
"We still have a lot of work to do before Notre Dame," Masterson said. "These next two weeks we will be focusing on getting the first mile quicker and maintaining strength through the second half of the race."
