Bulldogs Tied For Third At The Sam Hall Intercollegiate
September 11, 2012 | Men's Golf
Hattiesburg, Miss. - A tale of two rounds occurred on Monday for the Mississippi State men's golf team at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate. The Bulldogs roared back from a slow opening round to earn the eighth-best tournament round in school history over the day's final 18 holes.
"We got off to a shaky start," 10th-year coach Clay Homan said of the Bulldogs' first round performance. "I liked the way the guys battled back though. We're in position to win with a good round tomorrow."
After finishing near the bottom of the pack for the first round, the Bulldogs dug deep and carded a second-round 278 to end the opening day of the season with a 570.
Chad Ramey, who fired of a career-low 65 at the same event a year ago, led the Bulldog charge with scores of 70 and 71 to sit in a tie for 10th overall.
"The second round was easier for our guys because we had already seen the hole locations during the first round," Ramey said of the team's second-round turnaround. "We have our work cut out for us if we want to win."
Barrett Edens and Joe Sakulpolphaisan were prime examples of the strong finish, as both fired under-par second rounds after struggling over the opening 18 holes.
Edens shot 4-under par to close the day at +1, while Sakulpolphaisan went 2-under par to complete the first two rounds at 6-over.
Robi Calvesbert shot a 1-over-par 143 to sit in a tie for 17th. Axel Boasson ended the afternoon with a 151 (+9).
Competing as an individual in his collegiate debut, true freshman Haraldur Magnus, tied Calvesbert for 17th with a 1-over-par 143 for Monday's first two rounds.
Tuesday's final round at the Hattiesburg Country Club will tee-off at 8 a.m.
