Mississippi State Finishes In Top 25 At NCAA Championships
March 11, 2012 | Track & Field
NAMPA, Idaho - Action at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships has come to a close and with it came the end of the indoor season for Mississippi State. During its time in Idaho, MSU competed in six events and in each one they posted at least a Top 15 finish, to finish in the Top 25 nationally.
Tavaris Tate started things off on day one as he competed in the 400-meter dash where he finished ninth, with a time of 46.44. Tate then took a turn in the 200-meter dash, where he again was in the Top 15, as he ran 21.11 to finish 12th. In between Tate's competition, D'Angelo Cherry laced up to compete in the 60-meter dash where he finished 10th (6.62).
Day two began with lone Lady Bulldog Erica Bougard taking her turn in the pentathlon. Erica was also the only freshman in the pentathlon field. As the five events came to the end, Bougard found herself with 3985 and a tenth place finish.
Bougard was not able to pick up any points for the Lady Bulldogs who finished outside the Top 25, behind National Champion Oregon.
James Harris and Marcus Jackson were next up for the Bulldogs as they took turns in the high jump, where they also continued the trend of Top 15 finishes. As the event ended, Jackson found himself fourth with a height of 7-2 ½, while Harris was ninth (7-0 ½). Jackson's finish gave the Bulldogs their first points of the meet, as he earned 4.5 points for fourth place.
Following his high jump competition, Harris joined teammates Tate, Daundre Barnaby and Emanuel Mayers for the 4x400-meter relay. The squad finished the race with a time of 3:05.93 to finish fourth and give the Bulldogs another five points.
The Bulldogs 9.50 points placed them 21st, behind National Champions Florida who scored 52 points.
"Our athletes competed hard this weekend," coach Steve Dudley stated. "Now it is time to turn our focus to outdoor season and continuing to improve the name of Mississippi State in track and field."
Upon return from Idaho, Mississippi State will begin preparations for the outdoor season which begins March 17 with the USL Invitational in Lafayette, La.
