
Bulldogs complete Action At Louisiana Classics

LAFAYETTE, La. - Success was the story of the day, as Mississippi State picked up seven wins at the Louisiana Classics.
"Today was a great start for our athletes," coach Steve Dudley said. "We went out there with the goal of finishing in the top and at the end of the day we achieved that."
Favian Cowards started things off on Friday for the Lady Bulldogs as the senior placed second in the hammer throw with a personal best length of 194-08.
The Lady Bulldogs then picked up a trio of Top 5 finishes as Renee Masterson (4:36.75), Dominique Lockhart (4:39.10) and Katie Huston (4:39.78) finished third, fourth, and fifth in the 1500-meter run.
Next up a trio of victories as Wallace took the 100-meter hurdles (13.22), Jodie McGuff came across first in the 5000-meter run (17:48.22), and Adrianna Poole (11:29.29) was first in the 3000-meter steeplechase.
Also, picking up Top 5 finishes for the Lady Bulldogs were Keisha Wallace (19-04) and Ebony Brinker (18-08) who finished second and third in the long jump; as well as Chelsea Rae Smyth who was second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.01.
Rounding out the Top 5 were Brittany Covington (1:01.59) and Ocian Archer (1:03.19) who took third and fourth in the 400-meter hurdles, and Kanishia Carey who was fourth in the 400-meter dash.
A pair of field victories started things off for the Bulldogs as Marcus Jackson and Ed Wesela claimed top billing in the high jump (7-02 ½) and shot put (56-01 ¼) respectively.
Bobby McIllece continued the winning ways as he picked up MSU's second 3000-meter steeplechase (9:37.61) victory of the day. Jarrett Samuels then laced up for the long jump (24-00 ¾) where he finished first, just ahead of teammate Morrie Turner (22-02 ½) who was fourth.
Following Samuels and Turner's long jump performances, the Bulldogs picked up a trio of distance Top 5 finishes as Steve Shoto (1:55.63) was third in the 800-meter run, while Juan Sanchez (3:56.99) and Cameron Vernier (4:00.84) were second and fourth in the 1500-meter run.
Rounding out action for MSU were the 4x100 meter relay squads. The quartet of Wallace, Jody-Ann Muir, Candice Polk, and Carey posted a time of 46.91 to take fourth. Following the women, was the foursome of Trevarus Christian, Justin Christian, Garren Hendricks and Samuels who ran 40.26 to also finish fourth.
Following return from Lafayette, the Maroon and White will prepare to host the second annual SEC/BIG TEN Challenge on March 23.
