MSU Closes SEC Championship Day One With All-SEC Honors
February 24, 2012 | Track & Field
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Day one of the SEC Indoor Track and Field Championships has come to a close and with it came All-SEC honors for one Mississippi State athlete.
"Day one was a great start for our athletes," coach Steve Dudley said. "Erica and Keisha went out there and gave it their all and I am very proud of the way they performed. If we can continue the momentum they started throughout the meet then we will be a force to be reckoned with."
Erica Bougard embarked on the journey to Lexington ranked third on the MSU all-time pentathlon list, but when action ceased she found herself in the number one spot. Victories and personal bests in the long jump (19-09 ¾) and the 800-meter run (2:14.80), along with personal bests in the 60m hurdles (8.57), high jump (5-05 ¾) and shot put (32-10 ½) propelled Bougard to a second place finish in the pentathlon (4126), a finish earned her second team All-SEC honors. Not only did Bougard earn a spot on the All-SEC team, but being the first freshman to finish garnered a spot on the SEC All-Freshman team. Bougard's efforts earned eight points for the Lady Bulldogs.
While it was a great day for Bougard, she was not the only Lady Bulldog to see action on day one. Keisha Wallace also navigated the Nutter Field House track in the pentathlon where she finished seventh and earned two points for MSU. Wallace finished the day with three personal bests and a new place at fifth on the MSU all-time pentathlon list. Wallace began her day with a second place finish in the 60m hurdles (8.40); followed by a 12th place spot in the high jump (4-10 ½). Wallace then threw a personal best 32-05 to finish 10th in the shot put and followed that with a personal best leap of 19-03 ¼ in the long jump where she finished 4th. Wallace ended her day with a personal best time of 2:22.04 to finish sixth in the 800m run.
Bougard's eight points combined with Wallace's two gave MSU a team total 10 points, which places them tied for first with Arkansas as they enter day two of competition. The Lady Bulldogs will resume action at noon with Wallace and SEC outdoor defending champion Rochelle Farquharson in the long jump.
