Ramey Sits In A First-Place Tie Going Into The Final Day
October 07, 2012 | Men's Golf
"We are playing a very long, demanding golf course this weekend where pars are good," head coach Clay Homan said. "Chad and Joe really played good golf and set the tone. We hung in there during the second round and overcame some adversity to finish the round on a positive note."
State turned in a 29-over-par 605, to close out day one from the University Club. The Bulldogs are just two strokes behind third-place Louisiana Tech. The host Tigers of LSU's 21-over-par is good enough to lead the field going into Sunday's final round.
Ramey finished the second-round tied for first-place with Lane Hulse of South Alabama, after turning in a 145 for the first 36 holes. The Fulton, Miss., native climbed two spots up the individual leaderboard after he placed third for his 1-over-par first-round performance. Ramey brings a streak of nine-consecutive Top 25 finishes with him to Baton Rouge that stretches all the way back to the Gator Invitational from a year ago.
Junior Joe Sakulpolphaisan helped carry the Bulldogs along with Ramey on Saturday with his 3-over-par 36-hole effort. The Thailand born junior has posted at least a Top 25 showing in both of his outings with MSU this season.
Making his first appearance for the Maroon and White this season, sophomore Tyler Smith came out strong in his season-debut. The former "Student-Athlete of the Week" fired off an 11-over-par for the first two rounds, to tie for 24th overall. The best individual finish for Smith's career was a 24th place outing at the 2011 Jerry Pate.
Rounding out the lineup card for State was junior Barrett Edens and true freshman Ben Wood, who is making his collegiate debut. Edens and Wood both wrapped up day one with a 16-over-par 160.
Homan's squad will conclude the David Toms Invitational with a Sunday morning 8:30 tee time.
