Lady Bulldogs Capture Top 20 Finish In Pennsylvania
September 30, 2011 | Cross Country
"Today's meet was a little overwhelming for our athletes," coach Houston Franks said. "We have never competed with that many athletes at one time. I am proud of how we finished, but we definitely need to work on competing in larger and faster meets."
In a field of over 130 teams, Princeton brought home the victory on the women's side, while the Oklahoma took top honors on the men's side.
In a 6K race that included around 400 runners and eight Top 20 teams, Renee Masterson led the way for the 16th place Lady Bulldogs. Masterson finished 51st with a time of 21:30, followed by Anna Jarman (22:09) in 94th. Rounding out the Lady Bulldog Top 5 were Dominique Lockhart (22:29), Jodie McGuff (22:42) and Haley Greenwell (22:44) in places 116, 146 and 152 respectively.
"Our women did well today," Franks commented. "To finish just out of the Top 10 on a muddy course, at the end of the day I can be happy with that."
Juan Sanchez (25:40) led the way for the Maroon and White with his 117th place finish. Competing against hundreds of other runners and seven Top 20 teams, Sanchez and fellow Top 5 Bulldogs Philip Johnson (26:03), John Valentine (26:08), Cameron Vernier and Nathan Lewis (26:40) finished 32nd as a team with 941 points.
"Our men are very young this year," added Franks. "When they get a little more experience under their belt, they are going to do some great things."
MSU will spend the next two weeks preparing to travel to Clinton, Miss., for the Choctaw Open on October 15.
