ATHENS, Ga. – In the second day of action at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships Saturday, Mississippi State's Louis Cant and Malte Stropp advance to the quarterfinals of play in both singles and doubles with victories.
The 36th-ranked Cant, seeded sixth, battled Tom Jomby of Kentucky in the second round, downing the Wildcat 6-4, 6-1. He then ousted #9 seed Bob van Overbeek of Florida, ranked #58 in the ITA's preseason poll, in a tough three-setter 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 to move into Sunday's quarterfinals.
Stropp, ranked 46th, breezed through a two-setter by topping Matthew Thomson of North Carolina State 6-2, 6-3. In the round of 16, he ousted Florida's 10th-seeded Tripper Carlton 6-2, 6-2.
The top-seeded duo of Cant and Stropp teamed in doubles and the seventh-ranked tandem knocked off a Chip Cox and Kyle Koch of South Carolina 8-6 to move into Sunday's quarters.
In other Division I second-round singles play Saturday, 11th-seeded and 73rd-ranked Bulldog James Chaudry topped Florida opponent Billy Federhofer 6-2, 7-6(2) and State's 27th-ranked and fourth-seeded George Coupland faced a tough opponent in UF's Andrew Butz, who he defeated 6-3, 6-2. Georgia Tech's 85th ranked Kevin King took down Zach White of MSU 6-1, 6-2.
However, Coupland was unable to advance any further as Ignacio Toboada of Georgia took their round of 16 match 7-6(5), 6-1. Also falling in the round of 16 for Mississippi State was Chaudry. Chaudry faced the top seed in the tournament in Kentucky's third-ranked Eric Quigley, but took him to three sets before falling 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 in an outstanding effort.
In other Division I doubles action, MSU's tandem of Coupland and Trey Seymour played their postponed match from Friday night, topping Peter Nagovnak and Bryan Swartz of Tennessee 8-2. But Georgia State's Thomas Cook and Victor Valente bested the Bulldog pair 8-5 in their round of 16 matchup.
